The **Naniwa Nagura grain 8000** is an ultra-fine synthetic Nagura stone which will help you create a slurry on a sharpening stone. This Nagura is perfect for sharpening stones of 8000 grit or lower.
## Naniwa Nagura’s
A Nagura is an optional small stone that creates a slurry on a sharpening stone. These synthetic Naniwa Nagura’s are made from the same material as most artificial sharpening stones: Aluminium oxide. In the past Nagura’s were mostly used on sharpening stones with high grain sizes. These stones are often a lot harder and have more difficulty creating their own slurry. A Nagura creates its own sharpening particles and also ensures that the sharpening particles are more easily released. A Nagura also works when applying a finer finish on a coarse sharpening stone.
In addition to creating a slurry the Nagura is also perfect for use after sharpening. Nagura’s are namely also great when cleaning the sharpening stone. During and after use metal particles from the knife end up in the stone. As you are sharpening your knife you want to immediately remove these, especially in the higher grits these metal particles can leave unwanted scratches. The Nagura removes these metal particles from the stone to make sure you use it again. It is also practical to clean the stone after use. The metal particles that stay behind in the sharpening stone have a tendency to rust.
## Use
Sprinkle water on the Naniwa Nagura or briefly submerge it in water. These Nagura’s are Splashu0026Go which means you don’t have to hold them under water for a long period of time. Add water to your sharpening stone and rub the Nagura over the surface of the sharpening stone until the slurry has emerged.
## Which Nagura do I need?
Nagura’s are very useful in polishing as you sharpen your knife. The rule of thumb is: Choose a Nagura with the same or higher grit than the sharpening stone you wish to use.
### Nagura with the same grain size as the sharpening stone
A Nagura with the same grain size is more efficient as you use it and it will keep your sharpening stone clean.
### Nagura finer than the sharpening stone
A Nagura that is finer than the sharpening stone you want to use leaves you with a mixed slurry of the fine sharpening particles of the Nagura and the coarser sharpening particles of the sharpening stone. With it you improve the polishing effect of the sharpening stone.
### Nagura coarser than the sharpening stone
A Nagura that is coarser than the sharpening stone you want to use leaves you with a coarser slurry than that of the sharpening stone. It will remove material quicker, but if that is your goal we would rather recommend a coarse sharpening stone!
A Nagura is not a flattening stone! It extends the moment you need to flatten the sharpening stone, but it won’t replace a flattening stone when your sharpening stone needs one. Nagura’s can be used on all whetstones.
